PPRV must inhabit a living cell to reproduce. It directs the cell to produce copies of the PPRV's own genome and structural proteins.

The process takes place in 4 stages:

• entry of the virion into the cell,

• unfolding of the viral cycle 1: transcription,

• unfolding of the viral cycle 2: replication,

• release of the virions produced.
