Peste des petits ruminants

A disease which is spreading

The extensive geographic cover of PPR has been confirmed by:

  • the setting up of surveillance and control programs,

  • raising awareness of local populations,

  • the provision of sensitive and specific immunosorbent and molecular diagnostic techniques,

  • and the notification of disease emergence and epizootic outbreaks to the OIE since 2004 by health authorities of the countries where it is considered to be a compulsorily notifiable disease.

These notifications can be complemented by serological (detection of antibodies) and virological (detection of the virus) surveys in enzootic and epizootic zones to:

  • identify the viral lineage involved,

  • monitor the movements of the virus,

  • understand spread factors,

  • assess the impact of vaccination campaigns.
